What expenses can be paid for me by my Payee?

Rent, mortgage, utilities, cable, food, medical & dental expenses, personal care items, rehabilitation expenses (if you're disabled). After paying those expenses, your payee can use the rest of the money to pay any past due bills you may have or give you spending money.  If there's any funds left, your Payee should save it for you.  If you live in a nursing home or hospital, your Payee should pay the cost of your care & provide funds for your personal needs.

How often will I receive my funds from my Payee?

Customers will receive their allowance on a weekly or monthly basis based on a case by case scenario.

If you receive SSI you must tell your Payee the following:

  • Get funds from another source

  • Save any funds

How to spend a large payment from past benefits

If you receive a large one time payment & there's been a delay approving your benefits.  Your payee must spend the funds on your current needs & may use any remaining funds to pay for medical services, education, improvements to your home, or additional debts.  If your back payment benefits amount to a large sum the Social Security Administration may pay your back benefits in several small payments.  Also, if you receive SSI you cannot have more than $2000 ($3000 for a couple) in cash & property outside of your home & vehicle.  You must spend enough of your back benefits within 9 months to keep your total resources below the $2000 ($3000 for a couple).  If your resources are higher than those amounts, your payments may be stopped.

If you do the following you must tell your Payee:

  • Get a job or stop working,

  • Move from one residence to another

  • Get married or divorced

  • Travel outside of the U.S.

  • Go to jail or prison

  • Are hospitalized

  • Receive disability benefits and is no longer disabled

What you need to know about advanced designation

Advanced designation allows capable adults & emancipated minors & beneficiaries of social security supplemental income & special veterans benefits to choose 1 or More individuals to serve as their representative payees in the future if the need arises.  To help protect what's important to you the Social Security Administration allows you to choose a representative payee in advance.  In the event that you can no longer make your own decisions, you & your family will have peace of mind knowing that you have already chosen someone you trust to manage your benefits.  Social Security Administration will first consider your advanced designees, but will still fully evaluate them & determine their suitability at that time.  You can submit your advanced designation request when you apply for benefits or after you're already receiving benefits.   You may do so through your personal "My Social Security Account" or by phone.

To contact the Social Security Administration use the following methods:

  • Visit their website at www.ssa.gov

  • Call toll free at 1-800-772-1213 or TTY 1-800-325-0778 if your deaf or hard of hearing between 7am-7pm Monday - Friday.
